Important information on other Hall and Oates compilations

A number of compilation albums have been released over the last several years that all contain the same or very similar track listings. These compilations have been around for years and are issued by small (often unknown) record labels. One of the earliest compilations of this sort is "Past Times Behind" (1976 - Chelsea Records).

So what are these compilations, why are there so many of them, and why do they all contain the same songs? It is my understanding that these albums are collections of early demos, outtakes, and other unlicensed recordings from Daryl and John's early years. Sometimes recordings from Daryl's and John's previous bands will appear on these albums as well. According to Norma Parry (UK Hall and Oates Fan Club president), Daryl and John "do not support or approve the release of these particular tracks" but have no control over their distribution due to licensing issues. They also receive no royalties from the sale of these albums.

In short, the recent flood of compilation albums consisting of these early demo tracks is simply an attempt by these record companies to profit from the "Hall and Oates" name. Still, for the die-hard fan, these songs are worth a listen, and although Daryl and John do not support the release of these albums, I see nothing wrong with buying one out of curiosity if nothing else. In addition, some record companies have put extensive time into remastering and enhancing the sound of these tracks, so if you decide you must own one of these compilations, be sure to read customer reviews to find the best quality recording before you buy. You'll also notice lots of misspellings of song titles in the track listings below.
